There are many website designers of average ability. How do you distinguish yourself as a true professional? Start by getting a thorough education and a strong technical foundation in website design.

Lots of people learn how to hack together websites. But there’s a clear difference between the amateur, cut-and-paste method and the methodical, thorough style of professional web design. You can become an elegant web designer by learning how to use HTML, CSS, and other website design and development tools.

Your Website Design Education

You can start acquiring the necessary skills by reading books and taking classes for aspiring professional web designers. This approach takes you step by step through the various stages of website design and development. You’ll learn the intricacies of cascading style sheets and all the various applications of XHTML (which could fill hundreds of pages of text). You’ll learn shortcuts and more sophisticated ways of setting up style sheets, dynamic elements, and animated features.

Learning that Works

There are many ways of picking up these skills. You can attend classes part time while working. Or you can enroll in an online web design program, and learn on your own schedule.

The Rewards of Education

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a bachelor’s degree is required for most entry-level graphic design jobs (including professional web design).

Since degrees are now required, getting your skills up to par may require additional effort on your part. But with hard work and discipline, you can develop professional web design skills and push your creativity to a new level.
