Social networking sites seem to be fueling Web 2.0, so it should come as little surprise that several such sites were nominated for a Webby award, the most sought after award among professional web designers and Internet entrepreneurs.
In 2006, the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, a group of 550 illustrious figures in business and media, selected several nominees for a Webby award in social networking.
MySpace was among the contenders, of course. But there were other nominees that might not be as well known, at least not to non-avid gamers. Xfire.com is a gaming Web site that allows users to connect and play games together. So you no longer need to use IM or a variety of other tools to communicate with your fellow gamers.
Another contender was Bebo, a social networking site that might inspire comparisons with MySpace. It was started in Britain, but it’s beginning to pick up steam in the U.S. as well. Though one drawback to the service may be the moniker attributed to it’s users, who are known as “Beboers.”
Flickr was also among the nominees, a popular web site that provides a platform for storing and displaying photos. Of course, no social networking discussion would be complete without a nod to a dating Web site. This year’s focus was JDate, a dating service that connects single Jews seeking romantic attachment. JDate also took the Webby home for best social networking site.
