So you wanna be a professional Web designer? Your first step is choosing a Web design school. But to do that effectively, you need to know what type of professional Web designer you’d like to be.

Web design programs, like any other academic program for professionals, are not all alike. So you need to understand what you want from a Website design program before settling on one.

First, ask yourself a question: what kind of professional Web designer do I want to be? Do I want to be a Web designer who works mostly on crafting graphic designs for Websites? Or would I rather be a jack-of-all-trades, a Website designer who can design and program an entire Website?

Tech-Savvy Professional Web Designers

If you fall into the latter category, you’ll want to choose a program that offers plenty of technical courses. Take a course in HTML, of course, but also learn how to use Cascading Style Sheets, and programming languages used in Web design, like PHP, Python, or Java.

For Professional Web Designers with a Strong Artistic Bent

If you really want to stick to the more creative side of Website design, consider attending an art institute, or any program that focuses more exclusively on graphic design and technology. Learn how to communicate through the use of images, typography, symbols, and colors.

There are many Website design programs out there, but if you have a sense of where you want to go as a professional Web designer, choosing a school will come much more easily.
