The most important asset to independent web designers is securing—and maintaining—relationships with potential clients. Here are a few tips to help you win over your new client and secure their loyalty.

Always Be Professional

If you’re new to the professional web site design world, you’ll probably need to make a few adjustments to your communication style. The language you used with college dorm mates or even professors may not be appropriate with clients. Stay away from language that could be regarded as overly familiar or personal. Strike a friendly tone, but a consistently respectful one. Keep the conversation pleasant and professional, and focused on the customer’s web design project.

Good Listener, Good Web Design

The most successful professional web site designers have developed keen listening skills. They take careful notes when a client describes their visions for a web design project, letting the client serve as inspiration for the site, rather than call on their own preconceived notions of how a site should look and function.

Ask the Right Questions to Create the Right Design

Part of being a good listener requires asking questions to ensure you clearly understand your client’s objective. Ask smart, targeted questions that help clarify your customer’s requirements.

Spell Out Your Web Design Services

When it’s time to draw up a contract, make sure you state explicitly the tasks that you will perform and the time frame in which you will complete them. List each function in a bullet point list. Include the number of web pages, the number of graphics to be created, and a basic description of the design. The better you manage expectations, the more likely you are to have a satisfied customer.

Do More than Expected with Design

Always do a little more than is expected to make your client feel like they are getting more for their money. This will keep your new client coming back to you for each new professional web site design project.
