Web Design Inspiration

Sometimes you need to step away from your pile of HTML (or your ImageReady slices) and re-energize. Every web designer can use a little inspiration from time to time and, fortunately, something new is usually just a click away. Here are a few sites we look to when we need inspiration:

  • Cool Homepages
People submit cool websites and other people rate them on their coolness (or not-so-coolness). Nice breakdown by category: "Flash", "Very Clean", "Corporate", "Low-Bandwidth", "Rollovers", etc.
  • Design Interact: Sites of the Week
Associated with Communication Arts, this site reviews a different website each week. Added bonus: they usually list the URLs of the company who designed the site at the bottom of the review -- a good jumping-off point for further exploration and inspiration.
  • Kaliber10000
The mother of all web design portals. Their news ticker is updated constantly (and we mean constantly) with links to some of the freshest new designs on the web.
  • Minimalist Web Project
An ever-growing list of sites with "minimalist" web designs -- sites with clean, sparse, text-heavy designs that eschew the typical "slice 'n' dice" design.
  • NetDiver
Another design portal. Check the "What's New" section for links to sweet new designs or take a trip through the "Flash Gallery", if that's your thing.
  • PixelSurgeon
Another design portal -- this time with some swell interviews and features to go along with the regularly-updated news scroller with design links.
  • Three.Oh
Yikes! Yet another design portal! Very similar to Kaliber10000.
  • The 5K
The 5K is an annual web design contest based on one limiting factor -- all entries must be under 5K. Yes, that's right, just 5K. The results are often jaw-dropping; take a look and see what amazing work can be created under such strict limits.
  • xBlog: The visual thinking weblog
Design and visual thinking links compiled by the folks at XPlane. More than just web design -- you'll find great links on everything from accessibility to XML, from advertising to typography.
